We’re happy to feature Kelli Williams from our Billing Department in this month’s edition of SplashTales. Kelli is a Billing Specialist here at SD1 and is celebrating her 12-year anniversary with us this month.
We recently sat down with Kelli to talk about her role and her life outside of work.
Kelli, tell us about your role
Our team bills residential and nonresidential (commercial) customers for their sanitary and storm water services. This role involves coordination with SD1 customers, Northern Kentucky’s three water districts and SD1 departments to ensure that billings are accurate.
Why did you come to SD1?
I like working with the public. Before I came to SD1 in 2010, I worked in Trauth Dairy’s billing department for 12-13 years. I enjoy working with people in an office setting, affecting people and the environment.
To be honest, when my husband and I bought our house, I drove by SD1 as we looked for a home, and I told my husband, “One day I’m going to work there.” I applied probably once a month. Then, one day, there was an opening in Customer Care. I applied for it and I got the job.
Wow, what connected you to SD1 and its mission to protect the community and environment?
I grew up in Covington close to the riverfront. That affected me, living in an older home and seeing a lot of blighted houses and the different things going on in the environment, like water runoff and how storms have been. When I started here and went on a tour of our treatment plants, it gave me a lot of perspective of what we as a customer are paying for.
What are some of the rewards of your role?
Knowing that we are taking care of the environment and our customers every day. Whether it's customer service, billing or anything else that SD1 provides, we do it all for our customers. It’s also rewarding to work with people I really love. I've come in contact with a lot of people here and that's been really great.
What are some of the challenges of your role?
SD1 relies on other entities for information to do our billing properly. We rely on the three water districts in our service area, and each of them has their own method. Sometimes we get information and we have to call, have things explained or wait for them to do different things. Sometimes we have to redo our billing to ensure we bill our customers accurately and timely, which can be challenging.
SD1 is implementing a new billing system. How have you been involved in that process?
I was lucky enough to be asked to participate in a little training session with our new billing company. I got a good behind-the-scenes look at what we’re going to get, did some testing for our department and attended meetings to learn about different training opportunities that are coming up.
We’re still working on a few little kinks, like anything else, but it’s going to be a really great system for our customers and for us.
What do you like to do outside of SD1?
I’ve been married to my husband Tim for 23 years, and we’re kind of homebodies. We like watching movies at home, hanging out with our cat Peanut and gardening. Right now, we’re in the middle of a remodel, but we like to golf on occasion, go to the casinos when we can. We really love being outside.
Finally, what is your favorite thing about working at SD1?
Meeting all the different people. We have a really good group in my department especially, but overall we just have a really good group of people here at SD1.
Thanks to Kelli and all of our employees for your hard work and care in protecting our community. What you do is so important!
