Michael Eversole grew up in the small city of Morning View, Ky., and attended nearby Simon Kenton High School, graduating in 1989.
"I guess you could say I was the nerdy type in high school," Michael says. Still, he befriended a classmate named Elaine, a cheerful young woman he describes as a “cheerleader type.”
They were friends, nothing more. "We shared mutual friends,” he says, “so we ran around town together and were in the same graduating class."
After graduation, Elaine married into the military and frequently moved around the country. She made a name for herself in corporate communications.
Michael got married, too, and had two children, now ages 23 and 25. He started working at Sanitation District No. 1 in September of 1996 and left a year later, only to return four months later. Since then, he’s held numerous roles. He’s currently a crew leader at Western Regional.
Over the years, he and Elaine lost touch, and it might have remained that way if it wasn’t for their 30-year high school reunion.
Fate stepped in.
"Elaine's best friend forced her to come talk to me," Michael says with a smile. “I was there alone when she came up, and we spent the entire night sitting on the couch talking.”
The next morning, Elaine sent him a friend request on Facebook, and he invited her for a drink. “We’ve been inseparable ever since,” he says.
On June 20, they’ll celebrate their one-year wedding anniversary. The high school friends got married last year on Father’s Day.
Michael says the wait was definitely worth it. “She’s the perfect woman,” he declares. “I couldn’t ask for anything more.”
