Help Protect Our Streams: Follow these Storm Water Tips

suds in drain news flash

When rain falls on hard surfaces like rooftops, patios and driveways, it runs off the land, carrying pollutants and excess water to local creeks and rivers. This can cause serious issues such as flooding, erosion and pollution. Follow these storm water tips to help protect our streams.

Lawn Care

  • Pick up and properly dispose of litter and yard debris.
  • Use pesticides and fertilizers sparingly and follow label directions for proper use. Store wisely.
  • Cover soil/sediment piles with a tarp.
  • Use native grasses and plants in your landscaping.
  • Always pick up pet waste and dispose of it in the trash.

Home Repairs

  • Wash dirty construction tools and containers in the grass. Contact a waste hauler for concrete, mortar and other material disposal methods.
  • Remove excess latex paint from brushes/ rollers and wash in an indoor sink. Mix cat litter or sand with leftover latex paint to solidify, then put out with the trash.

Vehicle Maintenance

  • Wash cars on lawns or at a car wash.
  • Regularly check vehicles and equipment for repairs and leaks. Recycle oil.
  • Clean oil or chemical spills with an absorbent material like cat litter or sand.

Pool and Spa

  • Store chemicals in a covered area to avoid leaks and spills.
  • Discharge chlorinated pool water to the wastewater sewer system via an indoor drain or discharge it to the storm water system once the water is chemical-free.
  • Discharge saltwater to the wastewater sewer system or an area that does not directly drain to the storm water system.
