Wastewater Collection
Wastewater infrastructure is one of the largest infrastructure programs in the nation. This massive underground transportation system is comparable to the scope of highway and aviation infrastructures. Throughout the Sanitation District’s service area, wastewater is conveyed to the Dry Creek plant through an extensive system of interceptor sewers, pumping stations, and force mains.

The District's collection system consists of 1500 miles of both combined sewers and separate sewers. The combined sewers are located primarily in the river cities of Dayton, Bellevue, Newport, Covington, Ludlow, and Bromley. However, a number of separate sewer systems discharge into the combined sewer system.

There are 123 pump stations in Boone, Campbell and Kenton Counties that have been identified as being under the jurisdiction of the Sanitation District. In addition to the 123 pump stations, there are 15 flood control pump stations that were acquired by the District. These flood control systems prevent river water from entering the sanitary sewer system when the Ohio River is at flood stage, which is anything above 38 ft. If river water intruded the system, the river cities would experience extreme flooding and backups.
