Everything that enters a storm drain flows directly to a nearby creek, stream or river. Be the solution to storm water pollution by partnering with SD1 to place signage on some of Northern Kentucky’s 25,000+ storm drains.

Why storm drain marking?

Many people dump oil and other pollutants into these storm drains, unaware that they empty directly into nearby streams where fish and other wildlife live. Storm drain markers inform the public that only rain should go down the storm drain, not unwanted paint, grass clippings or other waste. SD1 hopes to mark all drains with messages such as, “No Dumping, Drains to Waterways” or “Only Rain Down the Storm Drain” to help alert people to the dangers of dumping substances or littering in curbside drains.

How to get involved?

Gather a group from your neighborhood, school, scout troop, organization or business. Save-A-Stream is a community service project that all ages can find rewarding and fun, but please remember all children must be supervised by a responsible adult. SD1 will provide your group with free storm drain marking supplies. Each kit includes:

  • Markers

  • Adhesive

  • Wire brushes

  • Door hangers

  • Plastic gloves

  • Detailed instructions

  • A map showing the drain locations in the area you would like to mark

  • Safety vests

  • Additional supplies to aid in marking and cleanup

  • Wash your car in the grass instead of the driveway

  • Use fertilizer and pesticide sparingly

  • Plant a rain garden and/or trees, shrubs, and vegetation where you can

  • Pick up after your pets
