The Enviroscape is a great interactive teaching tool that will allow your students to make a visual connection between land use and water quality. This fun activity for students of all ages features nonpoint and point source pollution in action. Enviroscapes allow students to see how to prevent pollution in our waterways by using Best Management Practices (BMPs).
SD1 has an Enviroscape that we will lend out to our teachers. Contact Witni Sztanyo at 859-578-6764 to check-out this unique learning tool.
Great hands-on and interactive activity that will teach students about watersheds, how to make a contour and topographical map, and what watershed they live in.
All the materials and contour/watershed kits are provided by SD1.
If you would like to purchase your own contour kits or to find out more information about contour kits, visit www.forestry-suppliers.com

Save–A-Stream...Block by Block is a fun environmental activity for students and service organizations.
Using the free S-A-S kits, groups mark a special water pollution message on drains in their community: “Dump no waste, drains to stream”.
Each kit contains: Fanny pack, map, brush, adhesive, storm drain markers, safety vests, traffic cones, instructions, and door hangers. All we need is you!
Your troop or group can become an environmental partner with Sanitation District No. 1. Help us educate our communities about storm water pollution.
Note to teachers: A great way to integrate social studies with science!

In 2003, the District, working as a partner with local school districts, developed and implemented an “Environmental Unit” that has been incorporated in the annual curriculum of nearly every fourth-grade classroom in the three-county area of Northern Kentucky. The lesson plans include topics such as point/nonpoint source pollution, watershed management, wetlands, and Best Management Practices (BMPs).
To date, almost 400 teachers have been trained on this national award winning, five-hour curriculum and over 5,000 students experience the lessons each year. Each student is required to complete a “water log” that contains assignments for each lesson of the Environmental Unit. This provides a mechanism to measure the effectiveness of the lessons. All materials and water log workbooks are provided by SD1.
The local school districts have embraced the program and the feedback to date has been incredibly positive. This success has triggered some local schools to initiate efforts to revise the unit to also accommodate middle and high school classes. Additionally, representatives from school districts in other parts of Kentucky as well as other states including New York and California have requested copies of the unit for use in their schools.
If you would like a copy of the curriculum, please contact Witni Sztanyo at 859-578-6764.
Let us help you answer the infamous student question, “When are we ever going to use this stuff?” by shadowing our employees for a day or two! Learn real-world examples as to how math, science, social studies, and reading are used everyday to protect Northern Kentucky’s health and environment. For more information contact Witni Sztanyo at 859-578-6764.
For fourth and fifth-grade teachers, SD1 will host training sessions to help teachers start off on the right foot. The sessions are an interactive way for teachers to learn how to administer the SD1 Elementary Environmental Unit and Public Service Park Field Trips. Training sessions are located at the District’s administrative office in Ft. Wright. For directions, click here. For more information, contact Witni Sztanyo at 859-578-6764.
Splash McClean is the District’s fish mascot. Splash helps children make the connection between human behavior and the environment. Our behavior can negatively or positively impact fish and wildlife habitats. Splash especially enjoys visiting schools that go above and beyond to protect our environment.
