Ft. Thomas Vernon Lane Project

SD1 has been working in this neighborhood for several years in an effort to eliminate sanitary sewer overflows (SSOs) and improve water quality in the local creeks and streams.  SSOs occur when too much rainwater enters the sanitary sewers during rain events causing the capacity of the sewers to be exceeded and manholes or constructed bypass pipes to overflow.

Sanitary sewers are not designed to carry rainwater.  Rainwater can enter the sanitary sewer system through cracks and defects in both public and private sanitary sewer pipes and manholes.  It can also enter through improper private storm water connections such as downspouts, driveway drains, area drains and sump pumps.  These private sources are considered illegal by the Kentucky Division of Water and the statutes that govern SD1.  Together all of these sources are referred to as inflow and infiltration (I/I) and the reduction of I/I into the sanitary sewer system is essential to the elimination of SSOs and the improvement of water quality.

SD1 is committed to working cooperatively with the city of Ft. Thomas and the property owners in this area over the next five years to rehabilitate and renew the sanitary and storm sewer systems.
