Storm Drain Marking

Make the Connection! STORM DRAINS ARE NOT TRASH CANS!
Storm water pollution has many sources. Water from activities such as washing cars and over-watering lawns enter our storm drain system carrying detergents, pesticides, fertilizers and pet waste.

That storm drain on your curbside does more than guzzle water. It leads directly into our waterways, including the Ohio and Licking Rivers. Unlike household drains that route to a nearby wastewater treatment plant, storm drains travel underground and funnel into our waterways untreated. When it rains, pollutants such as cans, paper and pet waste are washed down storm drains. Typically during heavy rains, this polluted water is discharged directly into a creek or river. Storm drain waste contaminates the water that fish and other wildlife depend on for survival.

What’s the Solution?
Save–A-Stream...Block by Block is a fun environmental activity for students and service organizations. Using the free S-A-S kits, groups mark a special water pollution message on drains in their community: “Dump no waste, drains to stream”. Each kit contains: Fanny pack, map, brush, adhesive, storm drain markers, safety vests, traffic cones, instructions, and door hangers. All we need is you! Your troop or group can become an environmental partner with Sanitation District No. 1. Help us educate our communities about storm water pollution.

Note to teachers: A great way to integrate social studies with science!
